30th Annual Meeting of Cetology Study Group of Japan , Tokyo
We had a wonderful time at this years Cetology meeting. It was great to meet researchers from all over Asia, listen to their presentation and discuss our newest results on Cetacean brain anatomy. The meeting was held in the National Museum of Nature and Science, Ueno. Big Thank You to the organizers!
How to Grow a Network on the Go?
Daniel Schenz from the department of Mathematical and Physical Ethology Laboratory, will present his exciting research on the unicellular slime mould Physarum polycephalum on 28th of March in Room 407 (4th fl.) – Science #5 bld. 11:00 -12:00 Everyone is welcome!!!
Well done Isabel!
Isabel received the prestigious Sasagawa research grant to study the sleep-system neuroanatomy of Odontocetes. We are very proud of you!
Congratulations Jinta!
Jinta Kasai finished his undergrad studies. He analyzed the cellular distribution in the brain of the harbor porpoise. Jinta will continue with his Master studies in our lab. Well done!
Visiting research collaborator
Kamilla is visiting us from Brazil, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, for one month to learn how to sample specimens. Welcome to the lab!

Brain and Evolution 2018: First Japanese-German Summer School on Comparative Neuroscience and Brain Evolution
We successfully hosted in collaboration with the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience from Ruhr University Bochum the first Japanese-German summer school on comparative brain evolution. Speakers from both countries presented exciting talks of the newest research, covering topics from bird behavior to the neuroanatomy of fish and whale brains. Despite that the school had to be cut short due to the big earthquake, this summer school received a very positive feedback from all participants.
Visiting research collaborator
For ten days, our collaborator Paul Manger from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, came to Japan to visit our laboratory. He gave an exciting talk about his research on comparative neuroanatomy to students, researchers and professors of Hokkaido University.
